Fighting Plastic Pollution: A Global Crisis and Cameroon’s Local Heroes

Join EEFABE Cameroon in Climate Action and Youth Empowerment. Together we educate, inspire, and act to Save The Planet for future generations.

Plastic pollution has become one of the biggest environmental threats of our time. Around the world, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in rivers, oceans, and landfills every year. In 2025, the global “Plastic Overshoot Day,” the point when the world generates more plastic waste than it can manage, was marked on September 5th. This means that for the rest of the year, plastic waste is piling up faster than we can clean it.

In Cameroon, the situation is just as alarming. The country produces about 600,000 tons of plastic waste annually, but less than 10% is collected. Most of it ends up clogging drains, polluting rivers, and harming wildlife. Coastal regions like the Southwest and Littoral are especially affected, with microplastics now found in seafood and drinking water.

But amid this crisis, a group of passionate individuals is making a difference.

Environmental Education for a Better Earth Cameroon: Leading by Example

Environmental Education for a Better Earth Cameroon (EEFABE) is a grassroots organization that’s turning awareness into action. Their facilitators are not just talking about the problem. They’re out in the streets, schools, and landfills, picking up plastic waste and sorting it for recycling.

In the Southwest and Littoral regions, EEFABE teams regularly organize clean-up campaigns in communities and landfill sites. They also run school programs that teach students how to reduce, reuse, and recycle plastic. These efforts are helping to build a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens.

Celebrating Leadership: Clinton, Edith, and Siduan

At the heart of this movement is Clinton Ndia Asonganyi, whose outstanding leadership has earned him recognition. Clinton’s ability to mobilize volunteers, coordinate logistics, and inspire young people has made him a pillar of the organization. His vision and dedication have helped EEFABE grow into a respected voice in environmental space.

Equally remarkable are Edith Vahkunseh and Nkengafac Siduan, two facilitators whose tireless work has brought environmental consciousness among youth to life. Whether they’re leading sorting workshops or mentoring, their passion and commitment shine through. Together, they represent the spirit of EEFABE: hopeful, hands-on, and determined to create change.

Looking Ahead: Preparing for INC 5.2

The fight against plastic pollution is also happening on the global stage. From August 5 to 14, 2025, world leaders will gather in Geneva for the second part of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC 5.2). This meeting aims to finalize a legally binding treaty to tackle plastic pollution across its entire life cycle, from production to disposal.

EEFABE is preparing to contribute to this historic moment. The organization is gathering data, stories, and community voices to ensure that Cameroon’s realities are represented in the negotiations. Their goal is to advocate for stronger international support for waste management in developing countries and to underscore the importance of grassroots action in addressing global problems.

Conclusion: From Local Action to Global Impact

Plastic pollution may be a global crisis, but the solutions often start at home. Thanks to the leadership of people like Clinton, Edith, and Siduan, and the tireless work of EEFABE, communities in Cameroon are not just surviving the plastic crisis! They’re fighting back.

And as the world prepares for INC 5.2, Cameroon’s voice, powered by its people, will be heard.
